Autism Care

Research and learn more about your child’s condition. By doing so, you and your family will be better equipped to make not only informed decisions for your child but understand your family member better and why he or she is acting in a similar way. http://goo.gl/mXoenL

Dementia Care

One of the greatest struggles with dementia care is dealing with the personality or behavior changes that may occur as the condition progresses.  Agitation and incontinence are just some of the naturally occurring behavioral changes and handling them may not always be easy.  But with lots of patience and understanding, compassion, flexibility and a little creativity, you may be able to face these challenges head on. http://goo.gl/98SNSh

Alzheimer's Disease

Dealing with an elderly loved one suffering from Alzheimer or other forms of dementia can be heartbreaking. As the condition progresses, earlier symptoms such as forgetfulness can develop into severe cognitive impairment and this could have effects on their behaviour. http://goo.gl/UE7RhO

What You Should Know About Adult Day Care

Adult day care is one of the many options available for families who would like to ensure the safety and comfort of their elderly loved ones.  As not many seniors like to be confined in a retirement facility or a nursing home, having a facility available to look after an elderly loved one during the day can be godsend for many families.

However, not many people are familiar with the concept and the benefits of sending an elderly family member to an adult day care as opposed to sending them to a long-term facility.  So here are a few things you need to know about day care services for the elderly.
  • What they offer.  Day care centers for adults offer services and programs promoting the health and well-being of their elderly guests.  They operate during the day, 5-7 days a week.  Programs in these facilities include meals and afternoon snacks, as well as a special diet for those with specific medical needs.
  • Benefits for the elderly.  Non-residential assisted living facilities day care centers for adults allow the elderly get the mental and social stimulation without necessarily having to give up their homes.  And just like retirement facilities, they can enjoy independence and interaction with peers without having to deal with the daunting tasks of preparing for meals and cleaning up the house.
  • Benefits for the primary caregiver.  If you are your elderly loved one’s live-in caregiver, a day care service can provide you a much needed respite to attend to personal needs, or simply enjoy a day or two vacations.
  • The difference between day care services and day health services.  Day care services for adults are often confused with day health services.  Day care services provide social activities, recreation as well as meals.  Some facilities may provide limited health care services, such as medication management.  Day health services, on the other hand, provide intensive medical services such as therapies in addition to social activities and meals.  In some cases, they have programs specifically aimed for people with certain medical conditions, such as Alzheimer’s.

Remember that not everyone will immediately feel comfortable in group settings, so be patient.  Your elderly loved one may show some apprehension about spending a day in a day care center for adults.  Give him or her some time to ease into the environment of the facility before finally deciding if the program is good for him or her.

If your loved one has dementia, introducing him or her to the facility as early as possible will give him or her a bigger chance to adjust to an adult day care center.
